“Tokyo Tsukiji” is my first publication.
The book is the result of two years of research and further studies focusing on the interior of Tsukiji (jonai shijō), the very beating heart of the market, at the moment in which it is emptying. The fishmongers are caught in the moment of exhaustion, both physical and mental, after over ten hours of work in strenuous conditions among specialist machinery, deafening background noise, customers and workers, who in these pictures gradually disappear.
In the photographs, I identify eight different frames in the working day of the market, and these form the chapters of the book: from cleaning up to cashing up, from breaks to portraits.
